LAKE PLACID — The Saranac Lake girls basketball team fended off a late rally from the Lake Placid Blue Bombers Monday, to earn a 33-28 road victory along with some area bragging rights.

The Red Storm jumped out to a 13-7 lead after the first quarter and seemingly remained in control for most of the contest.

However, while down nine points, the Blue Bombers nearly pulled off the comeback with a 7-2 run in the fourth quarter to bring the score within four. But a late 3-pointer from Emma Akey essentially put the game out of reach.

Akey finished with a game-high 22 points, which included four 3s. The win improved Saranac Lake’s overall record to 3-13, while snapping a six-game losing skid.

The Red Storm’s Aria Knobel scored four points, while Ashlyn Tomaszewski added three. Teammates Sophie Baker and Mackenzie Crane each chipped in with two points.

Ella Moodey had 12 points, which included two 3s for Lake Placid, which dropped to 4-10 overall. The Blue Bombers’ Alayah Whittaker had nine points and Ellie Shipman scored seven.

Up next, Saranac Lake will host the Moriah Vikings at 7 p.m. today. The Vikings (11-3 overall) topped the Red Storm 59-25 earlier in the season.

Meanwhile, the Blue Bombers are slated to take on the Seton Catholic Knights (3-9 overall) at 6:30 p.m. on the road today. Lake Placid defeated the Knights 24-17 in the team’s first game of the year.
