SLP boys fall to Hornets in semis

PLATTSURGH — The Saranac Lake Placid boys hockey team suffered a season-ending 4-3 loss to the Plattsburgh Hornets Thursday evening, in the Section VII semifinal round at the Ameri-Can North Sports Center.

Eli McCormick, an eighth-grader, scored twice for SLP, while his older brother Ayden, a junior, added one and chipped in with two assists. Freshman Mackaid Nicholas and junior Carver Bell also had assists for SLP, which finished the year with an 8-11-1 overall record.

Plattsburgh’s Sam Bezio and Cooper Holland scored two goals each, while Ben Bezio recorded three assists. The Hornets, which improved to 13-5-2, will now take on the Beekmantown Eagles in the Section VII Championship game at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse.

After splitting with the Hornets during the regular season, SLP got off to a hot start on Thursday as Eli McCormick opened up the scoring late in the first period. Ayden McCormick then pushed the lead to 2-0 in the second period.

However, Sam Bezio and Holland netted back-to-back goals within a minute of each other in the middle period to even the game at 2-2.

Eli McCormick broke a tie with less than seven minutes to play in the second period, but Sam Bezio responded exactly two minutes later to head into the final period tied at 3-3.

Holland scored the eventual game-winner on assists from Ben Bezio and Jacob Wheelin with 7:55 left in the third period. Plattsburgh finished with a 41-24 advantage in shots.

SLP senior Scottie Nicholas had 37 saves while the Hornets’ goalie, Owen Chapple, turned away 24.

In the other semifinal game on Thursday, Beekmantown defeated the Saranac Central Spartans 7-2. The Eagles, which are the top seed in the Section VII tournament, are currently 13-6-2. They beat Plattsburgh twice during the regular season.
