Late goal dooms SLP girls in title game

PLATTSBURGH — The Beekmantown girls hockey team netted a goal late in the third period to defeat Saranac Lake Placid 2-1 in the Section VII girls hockey championship on Monday evening at the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse.

The Eagles’ Rhianna Gilligan sent a wrist shot into the net with 4:49 left in the third period following a pass from Chloe Campbell to essentially secure the title.

For the Beekmantown squad, which rosters players from seven Plattsburgh-area schools, the win improved its overall record to 15-4-1. The team will now advance to the NYSPHSAA regional round.

After a scoreless first period, the Eagles got on the scoreboard first when Meegan Burdo buried a power play goal on assists from Eleanna Fullum and Katie McCormick.

Less than two minutes later, SLP’s Emma Clark scored on assists from Emmy Colby and Madison Blinn to even the game at 1-1.

SLP had a few scoring opportunities, especially late in the third period when Addy Colby nearly found the back of the net; however, her shot was turned away by Beekmantown’s Kori-Lynne LaMoy

The two squads finished with exactly 18 shots each. SLP’s sophomore goalie, Allison LaHart, turned away 16 of those shots.

The SLP girls finished the season with a 9-10-1 overall record. The team has just two seniors on their roster in — Stephanie Kilbourne-Hill and Talia Anastasia.
