SARANAC LAKE — Five local athletes from the Saranac Lake indoor track and field team qualified for the NYSPHSAA state championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island on March 6 and 7.

Seniors Miles Frazier and Gracen Foster, juniors Sam Duprey, Trinity Martelle and Ryan McGinnis-Theis will all represent the Red Storm at the state championships, following their results at the Section VII indoor track and field state qualifier meet on Saturday at the Plattsburgh State Field House.

Duprey and Frazier have been the most dominant weight-throwers and shot-putters in the league this year. The two finished first and second in both events at the sectional state quallifers.

Frazier, who is committed to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for track and football, qualified with a shot put throw of 49 feet, 6.5 inches to earn the top spot at the Section VII state qualifer, he also finished second in the weight throw (52’8″).

“Miles is the strongest athlete I have ever seen under a bar during my time in Saranac Lake but what makes him truly dangerous in the throws isn’t just his static strength; it’s his ability to translate that force into the circle,” Red Storm track head coach Cy Ellsworth said. “He is incredibly disciplined regarding his technique, obsessing over the micro-adjustments of his power position and linear drive. He is going to continue getting better.”

Duprey set our school record in the weight throw with a throw of 55’7″ to qualify for the state meet, while also earning a spot in the shot put with a throw of 46-2.

“Sam made the decision to change his technique in the shot put and weight throw mid-season,” Ellsworth said. “For most, it’s a recipe for a slump; for Sam, it became the catalyst for a breakthrough season in both the shot put and the weight throw and his best has yet to come.”

On the girls throwing side, Foster, who is committed to SUNY Geneseo for track, qualified for the state meet in the shot put, while Martelle qualified in the weight throw.

Foster is returning to the state championship after breaking her own shot put school record with a throw of 34′-2″. She finished in second place at the state qualifier event, just two inches off from the first-place finisher.

“Watching her find her rhythm after such a challenging beginning of the season is a reminder that in the shot put, the heaviest thing you have to lift isn’t the shot put — it’s your own head after a tough day,” Ellsworth said. “She’s done both, and the results speak for themselves. She is currently throwing the best of her career, peaking at exactly the right moment because she has stayed committed.”

Martelle had a monster toss in the weight throw on Saturday, placing first overall while also breaking the Section VII and school record at 40-8.5.

“Her journey to becoming the school and section record holder is a testament to ‘trusting the process,'” Ellsworth said. “While many athletes hit a plateau mid-season, her distances continued to climb. I am incredibly proud of Trinity, particularly in her mental improvement. She will hit an even better number in March.”

McGinnis-Theis was the lone non-thrower to qualify for the state meet. He did so, following a 5-foot, 6-inch high jump, which landed him in second place in the Section VII state qualifiers. Ellsworth said the rest of the league might have been stunned to see McGinnis-Theis clear a new personal best.

“(But) those of us who watch him work every day weren’t surprised in the least,” he said. “He is a natural athlete. The same traits that make him a good high jumper are the ones that help him on the golf course, as he is calm under pressure.”

While the Saranac Lake track and field program has consistently sent athletes to the state meet — both for indoor and outdoor — this was the largest number of competitors they will have sent to the indoor state meet since 2020. Ellsworth credited both the athlete’s hard work and his coaching staff.

“Behind every personal record is a support system, and this season’s progress would have been impossible without the relentless dedication of my assistant coach, Marla McGinnis,” he said. “Her commitment to the fine details and her ability to motivate these athletes through the mid-season ‘wall’ has been the backbone of our success.”
