Bobcats snowshoe team competes at home

PAUL SMITHS — Twenty snowshoe athletes took part in the Bobcat Snowshoe Race at the Paul Smith’s College VIC this past Saturday, hosted by the Paul Smith’s College Snowshoe Team.

Bobcats’ student-athlete Morgan Cheney of Pulteney won the women’s 5-kilometer race with a time of 38 minutes, 12 seconds. PSC graduate student, Nat Ross, placed second in 41:40, while incoming student, Olivia Kapuscinski of Oswego, finished third in 48:52.

Bobcats’ snowshoer, Joanna Kerchner of Bath, Pennsylvania, placed third in the 20 to 29 category in 1:00:33, good enough for seventh place.

Danica Stein of Poultney, Vermont, won the women’s 60+ category in 51:16, while Katina Sayers of Tully claimed the 50 to 59 category win in 54:22.

Eliot Soderholm of Reston, Virginia, won the challenging men’s 10.6K race with a time of 51:26, followed by fellow Smitty, Bryce Shannon of Sparrowbush, who won the 15 to 19 category in 58:51.

The tandem of Soderholm and Shannon has dominated the United States and Canadian snowshoe racing scene this winter. Shannon is new to snowshoe racing, and he is the Junior Men’s National Champion (both in the United States and in Canada) and the Junior Men’s World Champion, while Soderholm has remained undefeated throughout the season.

Second in the men’s 15 to 19 category was Brock Boissey of Cadyville with a time of 1:13:24. PSC graduate, Zack Sprott-Scribner of Saranac Lake, placed second in the 20 to 29 category with a time of 1:18:56. Bekkie Wright, also of Saranac Lake, won for the women with a time of 1:47:22.

Aidan Minihan of Newark, Delaware, won his second snowshoe race outright, winning the Bobcat 5K in 34:13, with teammate Cazimir Couble of Spofford, New Hampshire, not far behind in 34:54 to place second. Axel Linde of Red Bank, New Jersey, placed third in 38:12, followed by Reece Perry of Malone in 39:51.

The Bobcats snowshoers were rounded out by Noah Keys of LeRoy in 42:06, Timothy James of Lancaster, Massachusetts, in 43:07 and Devins Stalnaker of Westernville in 1:00:33.

Steve Vogal of Plattsburgh won the 50 to 59 category with a time of 41:06.
