Storm boys split Canton tourney
The Saranac Lake boys basketball team split its two games during this past weekend’s Canton Holiday Basketball Tournament.
In the opening match between two state-ranked teams, the Red Storm suffered a 56-55 overtime loss to the Madrid-Waddington Yellow Jackets on Saturday. Madrid-Waddington is currently ranked 12th in the state for Class C boys basketball, according to the latest New York State Sports Writers Association poll.
However, in the second game on Sunday, Saranac Lake — which ranks 16th in the state for Class B boys basketball — bounced back with a 71-19 victory over the Edwards-Knox Cougars. The Red Storm are now 6-1 overall, and remain unbeaten in league play.
Saranac Lake’s Cedar Crist was named to the all-tournament team for the varsity squad, while Finn Maiore earned all-tournament team at the JV level for the Red Storm. The Canton Golden Bears, which lost to Saranac Lake earlier this season, won the tournament title with a 51-40 victory over the Yellow Jackets in the championship.
The Red Storm boys will return to their home court at 6:30 p.m. against the Moriah Vikings on Jan. 7. The Vikings are currently 4-3 overall.
