SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake volleyball team claimed a season sweep of AuSable Valley, defeating the Patriots in straight sets Monday in a match that lasted a little more than an hour.

The Red Storm, which beat AuSable Valley 3-0 earlier this season, repeated the performance again at home, winning by scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-11.

Despite cruising to their eighth victory of the season and improving to 8-3 overall, Saranac Lake got off to another slow start. The two squads were deadlocked at 14-14 in the opening set before the Red Storm went on an 11-2 run.

After that, Saranac Lake faced little resistance in the second set, before jumping out to a 10-1 advantage in the third to eventually secure the win.

“I feel like they always need a set to warm up, and then they turn on the heat,” Red Storm head coach Megan Czadzeck said. “It was kind of a low-energy night. We’re kind of coming off with a lot of them being sick last week. Hopefully, that’s just what it is.”

Seven players served up points in the Red Storm’s well-rounded victory. Sophia McBride led the way with 17 points and six aces, and Lexie Donaldson came through with 11 points and six aces.

Donaldson, the team’s libero, was also solid defensively, recording a team-high 12 digs. Sophie Czadzeck also had a standout night with 16 assists, six kills, six points, four digs and two aces.

Mackenzie Crane and Kasey Clark led Saranac Lake upfront, combining for 15 kills. Senior Gracen Foster chipped in with seven points, three aces, three digs, one assist and one kill.

The Red Storm had 19 total aces in the match, and coach Czadzeck said her team is pretty consistent from the service line.

“Most of them can get a good run of serves in,” she said. “(Obviously) some of them have off nights, but for the most part, they’re pretty consistent, which is good. With my hitting, it’s like we have to have the right passes to get the right sets to get the right hitters where they need to be. So just, like, focusing on that, that’s kind of been our challenge lately.”
