Storm girls run to another invite win
BURNT HILLS — The Saranac Lake girls cross country team added to their already dominant season on Saturday, winning the Division II Burnt Hills Invitational.
Racing against some of the state’s best, the Red Storm girls had seven girls crack the top-25 in the 126-person race to win the invite with 49 team points. James I. O’Neill was second overall with 83 points, followed by Marcellus with 120 in third.
Saranac Lake’s boys placed sixth overall in their Division II race, earning 185 points. Ichabod Crane won with 78. Fonda-Fultonville and Albany Academy tied for second with 103.
The Lake Placid girls also had a strong showing in Division I, placing third overall out of 16 teams, and the Blue Bombers boys placed sixth out of 20 teams.
Meadow Nashett kicked off the strong day for the Red Storm girls, placing fifth overall in 19 minutes, 25.3 seconds. Teammate Nora Daley finished a bit behind in 19:31.1 for seventh place overall.
Pepper Laxson finished 12th overall for Saranac Lake in 20:01.9. Asa Bruno was close behind in 15th overall in 20:19.2, while Cadence Kennedy (20:27.6) rounded the scorers in 19th. Finnlee Orapallo (20:54.4) and Clementine Guenette (21:01.6) closed out the day in 23rd and 24th, respectively.
Academy of the Holy Names’ Maeve Joyce won the race in 18:25.9. Amelia Pilon of Marcellus was second in 18:43.8, followed by Coxsackie-Athens’ Claire Hubert (19:12.6) in third.
On the boys side, Emmett VanBuskirk (17:04.8) and Keaton Daley (17:13.3) led the way for the Red Storm, placing 19th and 24th, respectively. Saranac Lake also had strong finishes from Ebin Meissner and Rowan Popp. Meissner placed 42nd in 17:44.1, while Popp was 47th in 17:52.3.
Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Nathan Geroux won the boys title in 15:36.3, while Albany Academy’s Kayden Mowry (16:01.5) and Ericcson Lu (16:13.7) finished second and third, respectively.
The team was rounded out by Jonah Seleni (18:44.6) in 71st, Colin Glascock (18:44.8) in 72nd and Benjamin Ziemann (18:47.7) in 73rd.
In the girls Division I race, Leila Fey and Norah Francis led the pack for the Blue Bombers with a first and fourth-place finish, respectively, in a race that featured 108 runners. Fey won the race in 18:23.3, while Francis crossed the finish line in 20:06.6.
Duanesburg’s Lakelyn Laudato was second overall in 19:44.2, while Norwood-Norfolk’s Allie Snell (19:51.8) was third.
Lake Placid’s girls earned 151 points as Norwood-Norfolk won the team title with 55, followed by Marymount School in second with 96.
The Blue Bomber girls final scorers were Holly Erenstone (22:44.6) in 34th place overall, Ruth Mahaney (25:14.1) in 72nd and Rose Wenzler (25:32.1) in 76th.
On the boys side, Lake Placid’s Graham Scull led the way with a 20th-place finish in 17:57.1. Brothers Doug (17:57.1) and Jim Guglielmi (17:58.6) weren’t far behind, placing 21st and 22nd, respectively.
The Blue Bomber boys finished the race with 146 points. Oakfield-Alabama was first 89, Norwood-Norfolk (127) was second and Ticonderoga (144) was third.
Haldane’s Owen Powers won the boys Division I race in 15:45.2. Seton Catholic’s Colby Chase was second in 16:12.3, and Lake George’s Rory Linehan was third in 16:18.9
Lake Placid was rounded out by Connor Mannion (19:15.7) in 51st; Jesse Carlson (19:24.7) in 58th; Will Preece (19:45.9) in 67th; Sam Skutt (19:57.5) in 70th and Tyler Erenstone (20:17.5) in 80th.
Up next, the area cross country teams will race at 4:30 p.m. today at Moriah Central School.
