Bombers, Storm sweep final XC meet

LAKE PLACID — The local high school cross country teams put together another solid meet to close out the regular season Tuesday at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

Both the Saranac Lake and Lake Placid girls squads swept their respective meets over the Peru Nighthawks and Northeastern Clinton Cougars, while the Red Storm and Blue Bomber boys also secured wins over their opponents. The two area teams did not race against each other, despite competing in the race together.

Lake Placid’s Leila Fey was once again the overall winner in the girls’ race, crossing the finish line in 18 minutes, 32 seconds. Saranac Lake’s Nora Daley finished in second place in 19:32, while Peru’s Maddy Welc was third in 19:46. The Blue Bombers also had a strong finish from Norah Francis, an eighth-grader, who placed fourth in 19:56.

Following that, Saranac Lake then had four girls runners close out the day with Asa Bruno (20:09) leading the way in fifth place. Cadence Kennedy (20:59) placed sixth overall, FinLee Orapallo (21:00) was seventh and Gwen Haney (21:31) was eighth.

The Red Storm girls, who capped off the regular season with a perfect 15-0 overall record, had eight runners crack the top-15 en route to a 15-48 win over NCCS and a 19-42 victory over Peru. Meanwhile, the Blue Bomber girls, who had raced most of the season with just four runners, earned a 23-32 win over the Cougars, while beating the Nighthawks 25-30.

The Blue Bombers were rounded out by Holly Erenstone (22:55) in 13th, Ruth Mahaney (23:57) in 17th and Rose Wenzler (26:07) in 24th.

Saranac Lake’s boys took eight of the top 15 spots, with Emmett VanBuskirk coming across the finish line first with a time of 16:45. He was followed by Peru’s Brennan Peters (17:08) in second and Red Storm teammate Keaton Daley (17:28) in third.

Lake Placid was led by Graham Scull, who finished in fourth in 17:37. Blue Bombers brothers Doug (17:07) and Jim Gugliemi (17:09) placed seventh and eighth, respectively.

The Lake Placid boys earned a 21-39 victory over Peru and a 15-50 win over NCCS. The Red Storm also earned a 15-50 win over the Cougars, while topping the Nighthawks 19-44.

Saranac Lake’s top five runners were rounded out by Rory Popp (17:03) in fifth, Ebin Meissner (17:04) in sixth and Colin Glascock (18:33) in ninth. The Blue Bombers’ other two scorers were Connor Mannion (18:36) in 10th and Jesse Carlson (19:13) in 15th.

Up next, the local cross country teams will compete at the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Championships with the boys kicking off the racing at 11:30 a.m., on Saturday at Macomb Park in Peru. Following the CVAC Championships, the cross country team will compete in the Section VII Championships and State Qualifiers on Friday, Nov. 7, at the Cobble Hill Golf Course in Elizabethtown. The girls will race will commence at 1:15 p.m.
