SARANAC LAKE — The Paul Smith’s College men’s hockey team is off to its best start in program history. After securing back-to-back wins this past weekend, the team is now 4-1 overall.
On Friday night in front of an estimated 300 fans, the team defeated the St. Bonaventure Bonnies 6-3, before topping Union College by an identical 6-3 score on Saturday.
Paul Smith’s Colin Palmer of Clifton Park scored three goals and added two assists while receiving Player of the Game honors on Friday, while linemates Omar Uqdah of North Adams, Massachusetts, had two goals and an assist and Attila Quesnel of Montreal notched four assists. Liam Berger of Geneseo also scored his first collegiate goal on the power play.
“Scoring a hat trick and helping the team was an incredible feeling,” Palmer said. “Being named Player of the Game Friday was just the cherry on top — I’m proud of this team and the heart we showed throughout,” added the senior captain.
James Kircaldie of Londonderry, New Hampshire earned the win in net, stopping 18 shots.

Saturday’s game was dominated by another line as Sean Wright of Wappingers Falls, Julien Shafer of Queensbury and Collin Trapiss of Macedon outskated the Garnet Chargers on what seemed like every shift.
Wright lit up the Union keeper with two goals on his way to being named Player of the Game. Shafer finished with a goal and an assist, while Trapiss contributed with two assists.
“When your team feels like they’re clicking, the wins will come,” Wright said. “It’s easy to do well when you know your linemates back you up,” he added, complimenting the play of Shafer and Trapiss.
Sophomore defenseman Nick Ogden of Queensbury also had a good night, contributing an assist from the blueline. Starting netminder Kevin Zamazal of Opava, Czech Republic stopped 23 of 25 shots faced to earn the win before leaving late in the third due to injury. Goalie Ethan Stefaniak of Franklin, Vermont was solid coming off the bench to preserve the win.
Up next, the Bobcats will travel to Schenectady to take on Union at 8:30 p.m. on Friday before facing UAlbany at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Paul Smith’s College women’s hockey team remains undefeated through the first four games of the season after sweeping Binghamton at home over the weekend.
Every single player got their name on the score sheet as the Bobcats defeated the Bearcats 14-1 on Friday and 8-1 on Saturday.
Paul Smith’s Riley Newcomb of Cazenovia combined for five goals and four assists over the two-game homestand, including four goals on Friday night at the Saranac Lake Civic Center.
“I am excited to take what we’ve done this weekend and turn it up a notch for the games to come,” Newcomb said. “It’s just the beginning of the season, but SU is going to be a familiar and exciting challenge that will hopefully keep us rolling through this season.”
The women’s hockey team is slated to take on Syracuse this coming weekend in back-to-back home games. Friday’s game is at 6 p.m., followed by Saturday’s game at 1 p.m. Both games are at the Saranac Lake Civic Center.
Syracuse University is last year’s AAU College Hockey Women’s Division national champions. The Orange will look to continue their undefeated streak.
Paul Smith’s is looking to knock off the Orange, and they are hoping their solid start to the season will guide them to a victory. Leah Coulombe of Jay and Sam Barrett of Oak Park, Illinois, both former All-Americans, have already recorded 30 points between them over just four games.
Another player who has stepped up is junior defenseman Lindsay Palmer of Clifton Park. Palmer notched a goal and an assist in the 8-1 win on Saturday, and spoke about the team outlook after fellow defenseman Brooklynn Shumway of Bloomingdale went down with a broken arm.
“It was really nice to finally get a goal last night, knowing that every member of our team has now been able to score this season,” Palmer said. “Losing Brooklynn will be a massive loss for our season, especially on the back end. Running three defenders will certainly be difficult and tiring, but it’s nothing this program hasn’t done before. I know we are all wishing Brooklyn well in her recovery.”
