Storm girls soccer tops Beavers, 1-0
SARANAC LAKE — Kelsi Burth netted a goal in the second half Thursday to guide the Saranac Lake girls soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the Keene Beavers on the road.
The Red Storm were sluggish in finding their groove early on, according to head coach Jason Wamsganz, but as the game progressed, the team settled in.
“It was a case of nerves and uncertainty,” he said. “After about six minutes, they started playing possession and had multiple opportunities. We had scrimmaged Lake Placid the night before and our defensive play was very solid for so early in the season. Tonight, we didn’t play as well as a defensive unit and gave up way too many shots in transition.”
The Red Storm outshot the Beavers 20-10. The team was able to produce transitional opportunities on offense, but just couldn’t capitalize, apart from Burth’s goal.
“Offensively, we controlled things, but had a hard time finishing … It wasn’t so much our lack of finishing skill, we were in a poor position when trying to finish,” Wamsganz said. “We will continue to address angles and runs for the next few practices and try to get everyone on the same page. Overall, a lot of good things and I was pleased with our possession and selfless passing. It was nice to see Kelsi get her first varsity goal. She has a good foot and can take that shot and score from outside the 18. Emma came up big a few times in goal and got the shutout.”
Up next, Saranac Lake will host the Northern Adirondack Bobcats at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at the new turf at the high school.
