SARANAC LAKE — Despite it being the first time the Saranac Lake boys soccer team has stepped on its new home turf field this season, the boys put together another solid outing, topping the Seton Catholic Knights 2-0 on Friday.

Brothers Mason and Liam Stoddard both scored in the second half for the Red Storm to secure the team’s second straight victory. Ethan Knight and Connor Gillis added assists.

Saranac Lake head coach Brad Rafferty said it’s a nice feeling to kick off the season with a 2-0 record. But there are some things the team needs to work on. He noted that there were some pre-game jitters ahead of their first time on the new Wilson-Raymond turf field.

“It took us kind of a while to settle into it,” he said. “We haven’t practiced on it yet, so I think there are a lot of things we have to work out. They played really hard and I was impressed with their play. They had a couple of chances to score. They just came up short. We have to work on finishing.

The Red Storm essentially controlled play for most of the night, as the team outshot the Knights 20-2. But Rafferty said they need to work on finishing those scoring chances.

“We got our opportunities,” he said. “I think we need higher-quality shots. I’ll be happier with 15 shots if they get higher-quality shots. But overall happy with the way they played.”

Saranac Lake was held off the scoresheet until the younger Stoddard — Liam — finally broke through early in the second half. His older brother, Mason, added the second goal around 11 minutes later.

“Liam Stoddard (just) got pulled up from JV and only played eight minutes and scored a goal,” Rafferty said, with a smile.

Junior goalie Justin Lucia had three saves for the Red Storm, while the Knights’ Michael Riccardelli had 13. Rafferty said he’s looking forward to practicing on the turf after having all of their practices this season on the Schroeter’s Field grass.

“It’s nice to be off grass and on to a smooth surface, so I’m looking forward to getting practice in on it,” he said.

Up next, the Red Storm will travel to Clintonville to take on the AuSable Valley Patriots at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Saranac Lake beat the Patriots twice last season. The team’s next home contest will be on Sept. 17 against Boquet Valley.
