Red Storm runners sweep second meet
TICONDEROGA — The Saranac Lake boys and girls cross country teams secured a sweep in the team’s second meet of the season.
Racing at Fort Ticonderoga on Tuesday, the Red Storm girls earned 15-50 forfeit wins over the Ticonderoga Sentinels and Moriah/Boquet Valley as both had incomplete teams. The girls also topped the Seton Catholic Knights 15-50. Lake Placid’s girls, which did not race against Saranac Lake despite being there, had an incomplete team as well.
On the boys side, the Red Storm beat Ticonderoga 26-29, topped Seton Catholic 20-43 and defeated Moriah/Boquet Valley 15-50. The Blue Bomber boys fell to the Sentinels 25-30, but topped the Knights 20-41 and Moriah/Boquet Valley 15-50.
The Lake Placid girls top duo of Leila Fey and Norah Francis were once again dominant as the two earned first and second place, respectively. Fey finished in 20 minutes, 6 seconds, while Francis was just behind in 22:07.
Following their finish, six straight Saranac Lake girls runners crossed the finish line. Clementine Guenette (22:36) placed third, Meadow Nashett (22:43) was fourth, Pepper Laxson (22:49) was fifth, Asa Bruno (23:00) was sixth, Lila Zobel (23:03) was seventh and FinnLee Oropallo (23:09) was eighth. Gwen Haney (23:51) closed out the Red Storm’s solid outing with a 10th-place finish.
Seton Catholic’s Evelyn Palma (23:41) was the only non-Tri-Lakes runner to place inside the top-10 of the girls race. Palma finished in ninth.
However, the Knights got the top finish in the boys race as Colby Chase won in 17:35. Ticonderoga’s James DeFranco placed second overall in 18:40.
Saranac Lake’s Emmett VanBuskirk (18:57) and Keaton Daley (19:29) placed third and fourth, respectively. The Red Storm’s Rory Popp and Ebin Meissner also placed in the top-10. Popp was ninth in 20:26, while Meissner was 10th in 20:35.
Lake Placid was led by Graham Scull who placed fifth overall in 19:47. Teammate Jim Guglielmi also cracked the top-10, earning eighth in 20:25.
Up next, the Lake Placid and Saranac Lake cross country teams will race again on Tuesday at Mount Van Hoevenberg at 4:30 p.m.
