LAKE PLACID — Despite doubling their opponents’ shot total, the Lake Placid girls soccer team couldn’t find the back of the net Tuesday and suffered a 2-0 home loss to the Ticonderoga Sentinels.

Ticonderoga scored a goal in each half, as Natalie Cook had a helping hand on both scores, adding a goal and an assist. Addie Munson also scored in the Sentinels’ first victory of the season.

The Blue Bombers, which drops to 1-4 overall, had 13 shots on goal to Ticonderoga’s six. While the Sentinels’ physicality played a bit of a factor, it really came down to one thing.

“We just didn’t get the ball in the back of the net,” Lake Placid’s head coach Heather Brewer said. “In the first half, more than the second, we should have finished some of our chances. So we did a lot of good things, but you could tell as the game went on, some of the experience from the other team definitely helped them. Effort-wise, I’m happy with our effort and we’ll continue to work on getting better … and finishing.”

Munson opened up the scoring on a through ball from Cook around the midpoint of the first half. Cook then extended the lead with 13 minutes remaining in the second half off a rebound.

The Blue Bombers’ goalkeeper, Emma Clark, recorded four saves, while MJ Drinkwine had 11 in net for the Sentinels.

Lake Placid maintained possession throughout most of the contest; however, with more than half of the team’s roster made up of sophomores and freshmen, some inexperience showed. Brewer said that with the team’s game plan, which includes looking to play their feet when they can, passing back to the forwards quickly, they were able to break down the Sentinels’ midfield.

“(But) when we get to the final third, and it wasn’t even a hunger issue, it was just more that some times when we should have passed to the net, we kicked it really hard, or (were) anticipating how the ball was going to fall,” she said. “Some of that just comes from playing experience.”

Up next, the Blue Bombers, which dropped to 1-4 overall, will host the Northern Adirondack Bobcats at 4:30 p.m. today. Brewer said the team’s goal … is to get some goals in this contest.
