SARANAC LAKE — Four local student-athletes from the Lake Placid and Saranac Lake track and field teams will compete in the NYSPHSAA state championships this week.

The Red Storm track team will send seniors Dustin Burke, Jake Kollmer and Liam Nobles to the state meet. Lake Placid will send seventh-grader Leila Fey. All of them qualified after winning their respective events at the Section VII State Qualifiers this past Friday at Moriah High School.

“Under very poor conditions, Dustin, Jake and Liam did what they needed to do to make the state meet this weekend,” Saranac Lake’s boys track coach Cy Ellsworth said.

The NYSPHSAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place at Middletown High School on Friday and Saturday.

Nobles qualified for the state after winning the long jump and triple jump for the third year in a row. Kollmer once picked up wins in the 1,600-meter and the 800 events — after winning both last year. Burke won the shot put and discus, while Fey won the girls 1,500- and 3,000-meter events.

Ellsworth said with all three of his athletes competing as seniors, the state meet will be bittersweet for him, since they’ve all been a huge part of the track program over the years.

“They are very talented athletes, but what I will miss most is the leadership that they bring to our team,” he said. “I will be sad to see them go, but I am happy that they have all found a home next year to continue competing in track and field in college.”

Kollmer will run at the University of New Hampshire, Burke will join the Alfred State track team and Nobles will compete for the St. Lawrence University Saints.

“We have a lot of our athletes who have competed and are currently competing at the collegiate level,” Ellsworth said. “One of the biggest highlights of my coaching career is going to college meets and seeing so many of our former athletes competing. We may have not given them everything they have needed from a technical standpoint with 16 different events, but college coaches all know that our kids have structure, they work hard and they are receptive to coaching. It is a great reflection of our coaching staff over the years in both cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field.”

Nobles kicked off Friday’s state qualifiers, placing first in the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 2 inches, besting two Saranac Central jumpers. Lake Placid’s Nicholas O’Brien took fourth in that event with a jump of 29-8. Nobles then won the long jump with a leap of 21-1.5 to secure another state qualifier spot.

Burke swept both throwing events, starting with a win in the discus with a throw of 132 feet, before claiming the shot put in 44-3.5. Red Storm track athlete Sam Duprey placed second with a toss of 43-10, and third in the discus with a throw of 126.

Saranac Lake’s Brandon McGinnis-Theis (36-6.5) was fifth in the shot put and fifth in the discus with a throw of 113. Lake Placid’s Michael Kern (35-3) placed sixth in the shot put.

Kollmer secured first in the 800 in 2 minutes, 0.13 seconds, while Saranac Central’s Felix Walker (2:01.72) was second and Ticonderoga’s Cooper Moore (2:09.28) was third.

Kollmer also won the 1,600-meter in 4:26.32, besting Lake Placid’s Aidan Fay, who finished in second place in 4:32.96. AuSable Valley’s Reece Long (4:46.59) placed third.
