Saranac Lake falls to Ti in girls soccer

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team fell 4-1 to the Ticonderoga Sentinels on the road Wednesday.

Ticonderoga’s Addy Moore led the way with a pair of goals — one in each half — while teammates Addy Munson and Myleigh Drinkwine each scored one. Saranac Lake’s Tyler Burth buried her team’s lone goal, while Mar Carmona Guarido added an assist.

The Red Storm got on the board right away when Burth connected on Carmona Guarido’s pass two minutes into the game.

However, a Saranac Lake player was called on a handball inside the goal area, which allowed the Sentinels’ Drinkwine to score on a penalty kick. Ticonderoga then took the lead on a shot from Moore two minutes later.

“They scored a quick second goal while we were still perseverating on the penalty shot,” Saranac Lake head coach Jason Wamsganz said. “We can’t do that, we have to shake it off and just move on to the next. (Because) if you don’t, one bad play can quickly lead right into the next and that’s what happened. After that, we settled in and played OK.”

The Red Storm held its ground through the rest of the opening half and into the second, before injuries started to plague the team.

“We were already light on the bench due to a few pregame injuries and sickness,” Wamsganz said. “We had some girls play out of their normal position and it was evident that we were playing, trying not to make mistakes, rather than trusting our support and trusting our ability and being aggressive. We are going to have to learn to be more comfortable in those situations. Teams have to do it all of the time and we’re no different.”

The Sentinels scored back-to-back goals to close out the game. Moore scored around the halfway point, and Munson netted one around 23 minutes into the second half.

Ticonderoga out shot the Red Storm 12-7. Saranac Lake’s goalkeeper Emma Akey recorded eight saves while the Sentinels’ Keirra Bechard had four stops.

“Emma is playing well and made some beautiful saves for us, but we gave up three breakaways,” Wamsganz said. “(It’s) something we are going to have to address in practice, especially when we are playing different positions.”

Wamsgamz, whose team dropped to 6-4-1 overall, credited the play of Burth, Zuleyka Oliveras and Brisa Brunette.

The Saranac Lake girls soccer team is slated to host the Moriah Vikings at 4 p.m. today. The Vikings are currently 12-0 and beat the Red Storm 9-2 on Sept. 19.

Starting at $3.92/week.
