Storm top Boquet Valley in girls soccer

SARANAC LAKE — After falling to Moriah 9-2 last week, the Saranac Lake girls soccer team rebounded on Wednesday with a 1-0 victory in a home match against the Boquet Valley Griffins.

The Red Storm scored a goal in the 34th minute to improve to 4-2 overall. Tyler Burth, a junior, recorded the game-winner on a pass from fellow junior Stephanie Kilbourne-Hill.

“I challenged the girls to refocus and respond to last week’s tough loss,” Saranac Lake head coach Jason Wamsganz said. “It’s easy to have a game like last Thursday and hit the panic button, but the reality is, we are a good team, we do a lot of things really well and we need to remind each other of those facts. We had a short memory of the Moriah game and moved forward.”

Saranac Lake controlled the game and possession through most of the contest. The team also outshot the Griffins 9-3.

“We still went through a period where we didn’t find feet and gave the ball away to the other team because we just kicked it,” Wamsganz said. “We did move a few people around and they really did a great job. Zu Oliveras played sweeper and was phenomenal. Steph Killbourne-Hill moved to wing, Brook Burke (moved) to stopper and they both played well. We were just trying to shake it up a little, and due to some injuries, we tried to plug some holes.”

Saranac Lake’s goalie Emma Akey recorded the shutout with three saves, while Boquet Valley’s Ella Pulsifer had seven.

Following the victory, the Red Storm will take on the Chazy Eagles at 6 p.m. today on the road.

“They are always a solid group and we have to get off the bus with a focused mindset and create our own opportunities,” Wamsganz said. “Chazy is always tough at home, but we’re pretty tough, too.”

Starting at $3.92/week.
