Northwood student earns fourth ESWG medal

WILMINGTON — Alpine skiers Anja Robertson of Northwood School and Hudson Montgomery of West Mountain Racing will need to find extra room in their ski packs for the four medals they won this weekend at Whiteface Mountain.

Montgomery heads home with three Empire State Winter Games Alpine gold medals and one silver, while Robertson has to make room for her three gold and one bronze medal after they both claimed podium spots in Sunday’s slalom event.

Montgomery, who won both Friday’s men’s Super-G races and Saturday’s Giant Slalom silver medal, claimed his third Games victory, skiing to a two-run time of 1 minute, 36.0 seconds.

In the Alpine skiing slalom event, competitors rapidly maneuver through a series of gates. Participants completed two runs, and their final time is calculated as a combination of each. Sunday’s course on Draper’s Drop featured 59 gates and a vertical drop of 153 meters.

Jackson Magnus, who skis for Northwood School in Lake Placid, won the silver medal in a time of 1:38.9, while Windham Mountain’s Jack Conneely claimed bronze. Conneely, who won two men’s Super-G silver medals Friday, finished his two race runs in a total time of 1:41.0.

Jane Rathbun, of HoliMont Ski Resort, won the women’s event. She outraced the 43-skier field with a combined time of 1:39.10. The silver medal went to West Mountain’s Talbot Muirenn, 1:40.20, while Robertson finished in the bronze medal spot. Robertson, who won Friday’s two women’s Super-G races and Saturday’s women’s Giant Slalom event, wrapped up her racing weekend in a time of 1:40.6.

Moguls

Stratton Mountain Ski Resort skiers Emma Giulietti and Abram Mayer became two-time gold medalists in the moguls competitions at Whiteface Mountain on Sunday,

Giulietti, 13, who won Saturday’s competition, beat 25 other racers on Sunday when she worked her way down the 154-meter Lower Valley Trail in times of 22.17 seconds and 21.75. Judges awarded her second run 75.09 points, which earned her the gold medal.

Moguls separates itself from other Alpine skiing events, as the sport combines balance, style and speed. Athletes take two runs, with the judges taking their highest score. Competitors will take on moguls, as well as two jumps over the course of their run to hit the highest score possible.

Klohe Vance, of Killington Mountain, took the silver. She raced to a first run time of 22.70, then followed that up with a second run time of 21.59. That second run earned her 74.57 points and the podium’s second spot.

Vance’s teammate Symma Gans came away with bronze when the judges awarded her 65.77 points from her second run. She bounced her way down the trail in 25.47 and 24.73.

Mayer followed up yesterday’s gold medal with an equally dominating performance on Sunday. Judges gave the 15-year-old a second heat score of 73.82 points, after he finished with a time of 18.38. His first run down the course was clocked in 19.10.

Sugarbush Mountain’s Joseph Perillo won silver. The 15-year-old’s score of 73.82 was recorded during his second trip down the trail in which he stopped the clock in 18.86.

Perillo’s 13-year-old brother Michael, who also skis for Sugarbush, finished third. Unlike his brother, Michael’s first run resulted in his highest score. After clocking a time of 19.30, the judges awarded him 72.31 points.

Starting at $4.75/week.
