LAKE PLACID — The young Saranac Lake Placid girls hockey team earned a pair of wins over the Rockland Rockies this weekend in Lake Placid.

SLP rolled to a 5-1 win over the Rockies in the first game on Saturday at the Olympic Center’s USA Rink. The team carried over its solid play into Sunday’s tilt with Rockland, who hail from Section I, with a 2-0 victory at the Olympic Center’s 1932 Rink.

SLP was without seven of its players on Sunday but still controlled play for most of the contest and outshot the Rockies 26-16.

“We could have easily folded up and not played well today, but they played really well,” SLP head coach Butch Martin said. “We were down (some) key players and we went out to get the win. We knew that we could get it. They dominated the game again. They chased the puck.”

Freshman Willow Wood gave SLP a 1-0 edge with her first career varsity goal at 2:41 in the opening period with sophomore Stephanie Kilbourne-Hill assisting on the play. From that point on, the hosts held the lead for the remainder of the contest.

With a one-goal advantage, SLP’s lone senior, Mia Nichols, extended the team’s lead with a wrist shot after stealing the puck in SLP’s defensive zone and eventually skating nearly the length of the ice.

“That was a huge goal because if they get one, there’s no cushion,” Martin said. “But then Mia gets that nice goal, which is great. She’s been playing really well. She’s the only senior and she has really led us this past week.”

SLP’s goalkeeper, Bradana Gilman, stopped 16 shots for her first career varsity shutout. Rockland’s Colette Curley had 24 saves.

“(Gillman) had some big saves in the second (period),” Martin said. “That was a great effort by all of them. We’ve got girls that have hardly played and they’re in there getting full shifts today. It was good to see and it was really a nice win for them.”

With the two wins, the SLP girls improved to 3-12-2 overall. The team is slated to host the Canton Golden Bears at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday at the Saranac Lake Civic Center.
