Fancy skating championships held in Lake Placid
The 52nd Lake Placid ISI Championships were held in Lake Placid on Jan. 5 and 6.
It was the first time that skaters from the ISI Championships could qualify by winning their Artistic ISI Competition and advance to compete in World Figure Sport’s Junior Fancy Skating International, held on the same weekend.
World Figure Sport’s Junior Fancy Skating International was judged by a panel including Olympic silver medalist Paul Wylie, six-time World Figure and Fancy Skating silver medalist Marc Fenczak and world officials Alicia Walter and Robin Miller.
It was followed by an “Art of Skating” workshop and exhibition by World Figure and Fancy Skating Artists including Spanish World Junior skating artist Liba Talula Vitols, 2020 World Figure and Fancy Skating Championships silver medalist and 2019 World Junior Champion from Great Britain Anne Bennett, World skating artist of Norway, Alysen Stryker and Olympian and World Figure Sport’s Chef de Mission of Education and Sport, Karen Courtland Kelly.
World Figure Sport also organized special events with the Sharper Edge and Silver Blades Skating Schools, including honoring the memory of Robert C. Kelton and honoring his family for starting the event 52 years ago.
Award ceremonies occurred every 30 minutes in the Olympic Center and were presided over by coach Dawn Diminico. Coach Elizabeth Shaughnessy presided over the Chocolate Chip Cookie Closing Ceremony.
“We look forward to having the 53rd Lake Placid ISI Championships and World Figure Sport’s Junior Fancy Skating International next year to kick off the 2025 season,” Courtland Kelly said. “Everyone had a great time at the Olympic Center and the ice was fabulous. Thank you to the Olympic Regional Development Authority.”
