Bobsled, skeleton resumes World Cup sliding

ST. MORITZ, SWITZERLAND — Team USA resumed the World Cup circuit in this past weekend with three days of racing in the Swiss Alps.

On Friday, the action started on a high note with Katie Uhlaender of Breckenridge, Colorado, securing a third-place finish in women’s skeleton with her time of 2 minutes, 19.45 seconds. After persevering through injury, this was the five-time Olympian’s first World Cup race back after recovery and first World Cup medal in 11 years.

“I am really excited about the support I had coming off another surgery and looking forward to one last Olympics that starts and finishes my career in the same country,” Uhlaender said. “My boyfriend has been a great support, and my friends and family have been there to cheer me on! I could not be happier.”

Mystique Ro of Nokesville, Virginia, slid into eighth with a time of 2:19.97 and Sara Roderick of Truro, Massachusetts, placed 15th with a time of 2:20.83.

In men’s skeleton, Dan Barefoot, Austin Florian and Hunter Williams competed for Team USA. Barefoot, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, placed 16th with a two-run time of 2:16.32, Florian, of Southington, Connecticut, placed 20th in 2:16.70 and Williams, of Carnegie, Pennsylvania, placed 29th with his one-run time of 1:09.23.

There was also a skeleton mixed team competition in which Florian and Roderick teamed up, earning 14th place.

In women’s monobob on Saturday, Elana Meyers Taylor of Douglasville, Georgia narrowly missed the podium with her fourth-place finish with a time of 2:23.25. Kaysha Love of Herriman, Utah placed ninth in 2:24.01 and Lauren Brzozowski of Wyckoff, New Jersey, placed 19th in 2:26.36.

In two-man bobsled, Frank Del Duca of Bethel, Maine, and Adrian Adams of Reidsville, North Carolina, placed 13th with a two-run time of 2:212.73 while Kris Horn of Pembroke, Massachusetts, and Darius Joseph of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, placed 22nd with a one-run time of 1:07.07.

In two-woman on Sunday, Love and Azaria Hill of Canyon Country, California placed sixth with their time of 2:17.85, while Meyers Taylor and Emily Renna of Fairport placed eighth with a time of 2:18.04, and Brzozowski and Jasmine Jones of Greensburg, Pennsylvania placed 18th in 2:20.14.

In four-man, Del Duca, alongside teammates Josh Williamson of Lake Mary, Florida, Hakeem Abdul-Saboor of Powhatan, Virginia and Manteo Mitchell of Shelby, North Carolina placed 14th with a time of 2:10.72 and Geoff Gabois’ team which included Joseph, Collin Storms of Lewisville, Texas and Jace Johnson of Bessemer, Alabama placed 17th in 2:12.31. Gabois is from Milton, Vermont.

In the Europe Cup division of competition, sliding also resumed this week in Lillehammer, Norway with men’s and women’s skeleton.

On the first day of competition in men’s skeleton, Nick Tucker of Baltimore, Maryland, placed 16th in 1:45.88, Darryl Payne of Austin, Texas, placed 22nd in 1:46.81 and Bradley Nicol of Springville, Utah, placed 25th in 1:46.97. On the women’s side, Michelle Toukan of Central City, Nebraska placed 12th with a time of 1:47.96.

On the second day of competition, Nicol placed 20th in 1:46.28, Tucker placed 23rd in 1:46.56 and Payne placed 27th with a one-run time of 53.46. Toukan placed 14th with a one-run time of 54:02 in- the women’s race.

Races in the World Cup division will resume in Lillehammer, Norway on Sunday.
