SARANAC LAKE — The last time the Saranac Lake girls soccer team played against the Ticonderoga Sentinels on Sept. 12, it didn’t go that well. The Red Storm were blanked 5-0 on the Sentinels’ home field — the biggest loss the team has suffered this season.

But when Saranac Lake faced off against Ticonderoga Wednesday evening, they proved that they are a much-improved team since their last go around, earning a 1-1 draw with the Sentinels at Schroeter’s Field.

Despite a completely different outing from the last time, the two squads battled it out. Red Storm head coach Jason Wamsganz said there were no real major changes to his team’s game plan.

“Just a couple of wrinkles to mitigate some of the speed that they had,” he said, “and they did a really good with that. They didn’t have any fast breaks on us this time.”

After a dominant 3-1 win over Boquet Valley on Monday, Saranac Lake carried the momentum into Wednesday’s contest when senior Samra Cirikovic opened the scoring on a cross-field pass from sophomore Ellie Willett with 1 minute, 42 seconds left in the first half.

Ticonderoga’s Addy Moore netted the equalizer with just five seconds remaining in the first half on a shot toward the left side of the net that snuck past the Red Storm’s sophomore goalie, Emma Akey, who had come away with two big stops prior to the goal.

While both squads were held without a goal, Saranac Lake dominated possession for large parts of the contest, edging out the Sentinels 39-30 in shots. Wamsganz said he was proud of how physically his team played.

“They played positionally, they balanced and they recovered,” he said. “They did all the things that we have been talking about and practicing. I’m just super proud of them. We generated really good chances offensively and controlled a lot of the game. We just did a lot of good things.”

Saranac Lake’s biggest scoring opportunity came during the first overtime when sophomore Lizzie Harvey nearly sent the Sentinels packing on a rifling shot that hit off the crossbar. Fellow sophomore Tyler Burth and senior Madison Moody-Durant had shots that sailed wide in the late stages of Wednesday’s game.

“We’ve scored eight goals now in the last four games so, we’re generating offense,” Wamsganz said. “Sometimes it bounces your way, sometimes it doesn’t. I think we panicked a few times on some shots and crosses that we could’ve taken our time with a little more, but I can accept that in a game like tonight.”

Ticonderoga’s Jaelyn Whitford came close to a late winner when her long-range strike in the second half was tipped by Akey over the net.

Akey had another strong performance for the Red Storm, finishing with 22 saves. Keirra Bechard recorded 19 stops for the Sentinels.

With the tie, Saranac Lake’s overall record is now 3-5-2. The Red Storm will host the Seton Catholic Knights today at 4:30 p.m.
