Area tracksters compete at states

Five Tri-Lakes track and field athletes competed in New York State Track and Field Championships at Middletown High School this past Friday and Saturday.

Senior Sam Ash and sophomore Liam Nobles represented Saranac Lake, senior Andrew Scanio and freshman Kai McKinnon competed for Lake Placid at the meet and senior Olivia Ellis represented Tupper Lake.

Ash turned in the top result for Saranac Lake, medaling in the 1,600-meter event with a sixth-place finish. Ash finished in a time of 4 minutes, 24.33 seconds. Roan Kelly of Randolph won the event in 4:11.73.

In his debut at the outdoor state meet, the Red Storm’s Nobles earned two top-10 finishes in the jumping competitions. Nobles finished the long jump in eighth place with a leap of 21 feet, 8.75 inches, while also taking ninth place in the triple jump with a leap of 42-07.25.

Nobles was the only sophomore to compete in the long jump or triple jump. East Rochester’s Manuel Sepulveda (22-06.75) won the long jump and West Hempstead’s Jurrel Hall (48-10.25) won the triple jump.

The Blue Bombers’ Scanio wrapped up his varsity athletic career with a 16th-place finish in the 3,200-meter event with a time of 9:49.18. Luke Tighe, of Pulaski, won the event in 9:10.82.

In McKinnon’s first-ever state track meet, she placed 13th in the 2K Steeplechase at 8:00.51, while Angelina Napoleon, of Allegany-Lime, won the event in 6:18.41.

Tupper Lake’s Ellis finished in 10th place in the girls’ pentathlon for the second division with 2,400 points. Alexander’s Jadyn Mullen won the Division Two girls’ pentathlon title with 3,492 points.

Ellis finished inside the top 10 in three events of her five pentathlon events. She tied for fourth in the high jump (4 feet, 9.50 inches), ninth place in the 100-meter hurdles (17.75 seconds) and 10th in the 800-meter (2:37.75).

In her final two events, Ellis placed 12th in the shot put competition with a toss of 23 feet, 1.75 inches and 13th in the long jump with a leap of 14-0.25.
