SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake track and field teams won their regular season finale Friday with the boys topping Plattsburgh 129-0 and the girls winning 121-21 over the Hornets on their home track.

The Red Storm boys captured all 16 events, with five boys — Jake Kollmer, Sam Ash, Soren Wolford, Liam Nobles and Mitchell Ellsworth — winning two individual events each.

Ellsworth, a senior, won both throwing events. He won the discus with a throw of 134-11 and the shot put at 46-8. Ash, also a senior, won the 800-meter in 2 minutes, 9.6 seconds and the 1,600-meter in 4:48.9.

Kollmer won the 400-meter in 54.7 seconds and the 3,200-meter in 10:29.1. Liam Nobles claimed both the long jump (20 feet, 8 inches) and the triple jump (39-7). Saranac Lake’s Wolford claimed the 100-meter dash (11.6) and the 200 (23.1).

Wolford was also a part of both the 1,600-meter and the 400-meter relay teams that took first. The 1,600-meter relay team of Wolford, Robbie Sinclair, Sam Madden and Sage Kite-Whidden won in 3:51.9. The 400 relay team of Kite-Whidden, Wolford, Nobles and Elijah Schenk won in 46.3.

The team’s 3,200-meter relay team of Madden, Sam Bickford, Aiden Hesseltine and Morgan Martin finished first in 9:15.9.

Also winning for the Red Storm were Martin in the 400-hurdles (69.0), Carter Hewitt in the 110 hurdles (16.1) and Landon LaDue in the high jump (5-4).

On the girls’ side, the Red Storm won 15 events, with Plattsburgh winning just the 200-meter event. With the win, the Saranac Lake girls concluded the regular season, finishing 2-1 in its last three meets. The team’s lone loss during that stretch came against the undefeated CVAC champion Saranac Central Chiefs.

“Our older athletes stole the show (on Friday), while our younger athletes took a huge and important step forward in becoming an up-and-coming contender,” Red Storm coach Jason Wamsganz said in a statement. “We stated in preseason that we are extremely young and inexperienced, however, their efforts and determination is setting them up for success as they move forward.”

Awa Kujabi had a solid night, winning three individual events while being a part of a winning relay team. Kujabi won the 100-meter dash in 13.8, the 400-meter hurdles in 1:20.3 and the long jump.

Sophomores Addison Ash and Maggie Reed won two individual events. Ash won the 400 (67.3) and the 1,500 (5:52.9). Reed won the 100 hurdles (20.3) and the high jump (4-4).

Kujabi and Ash teamed up with Brooklynn Shumway and Raiana Baumann to win the 1,600-meter relay in 4:47.0.

“We had so many personal records Friday night and our young athletes really came into their own gaining confidence as they put together many great performances,” Wamsganz said.

The Red Storm won both throwing events, with Coral Brown taking the shot put (26-3.5) and Cora Hotchkiss winning the discus (74-4).

Saranac Lake also picked up individual wins from Alice LaDue in the triple jump (26-4.5), Astacia Bruno in the 800 (2:59.9) and Clementine Gunette in the 3,000-meter (13:28.4).

The 400-meter relay team of Baumann, Zuleyka Oliveras, Maddy Stavenhagen and Essie Ames won their event in 59.8. The Red Storm’s 3,200-meter relay team of Shumway, Guenette, Bruno and Lucy Thill won in 11:45.4.

The Red Storm track teams will now shift their focus to the sectional meet on Wednesday at Peru High School. The meet will start with field events at 2 p.m. and track events at 3 p.m.

“We are looking to get as many athletes into the sectional meet as possible,” Wamsaganz said. “Our younger athletes need to experience a meet on the big stage in order for them to feel comfortable in the coming years.”
