TUPPER LAKE — The Tupper Lake High School track-and-field team hosted its first home meet of the season Thursday against the Norwood-Norfolk Flyers and the Canton Golden Bears.

While the host athletes performed fairly well, when it came to scoring, both the Lumberjack boys and the girls teams fell to their opponents.

The Tupper Lake girls lost to the Flyers 154-61 and to the Golden Bears 147-65. On the boys side, Canton topped Tupper Lake 173-38, while the Lumberjacks found themselves in a slightly closer contest against the Flyers, falling 122-76.

Senior Olivia Ellis powered the Lumberjacks to their lone individual victory, while also finishing in the top three in three other events. Typically competing in pentathlon — long jump, high jump, shot put, 100-meter hurdles and the 800 — she competed in four events on Thursday. Pentathlon was not held because it is usually only offered at bigger meets.

Ellis won the high jump with a 4-foot, 6-inch jump. She also took second in both the long jump (14-2.5) and the 100-meter hurdles at 17.10 seconds and finished third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:14.8, with teammate Raegan Fritts taking fourth in 1:15.9. Tupper Lake’s Fritts also took third in the triple jump with a jump of 28-05.

Fritts had a solid day as well, helping the 4×400 relay team place third. The team also included Sadie Safford, Lacey Tarbox and Meika Nadeau. They finished in 5:03.2. The Lumberjacks 4×100 relay team also had a third-place finish. The relay team consisted of Mary Becker, Caydence Flagg, Amelia Pratt and Emily Bissonette. They finished in a time of 1:05.2.

On the boys side, Tupper Lake’s top finish came from its 4×100 relay team of Logan Flagg, Cohen Gerstenberger, Kyler McClain and Brayden Shannon, which placed second in 47.90. The team’s 4×100-meter relay team of Flagg, Sean Bujold, Brock Fleishman and Jonah Kendall finished in third place in 4:09.5.

Flagg tied for fourth place in the high jump (4-9.0). Shannon placed fourth in the 100-meter (11.9) and fifth in the 200 (26.4). Tupper Lake’s Michael Baker led the throws team by placing third in the shot put (31-1.25) and fourth in the discus (74-07).

Following Thursday’s meet, the Lumberjack girls fell to 2-5 on the season, while the boys dropped to 1-6. Tupper Lake will return home on Monday for a dual meet against Ogdensburg Free Academy at 4:30 p.m.
