LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid softball team scored 10 runs in its first two innings and never looked back, topping the Johnsburg/Minerva Irish Jaguars 13-3 at home on Tuesday.

The contest ended the Blue Bombers’ three-game losing streak while improving their overall record to 3-5.

“The last few games we’ve come within some really good teams and it just didn’t turn out in our favor,” Blue Bombers head coach Mary Kopcienski said. “To finally get a win, we’re hoping that momentum can carry us into the end of our season.”

The Blue Bombers got off to a hot start on Tuesday when sophomore Brooke Beaney pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out two batters and in the team’s first trip to the plate, they scored four runs.

After holding the Irish Jaguars without a run in the second, Lake Placid extended its lead to 10-0. The Blue Bombers batters were walked 10 times while recording just two hits during the first two innings.

“I just told my players to be smart hitters,” Kopcienski said. “Don’t hit something to help out the other team’s pitcher and we were just making good contact and smart baserunning choices.”

Beaney, Isis Shaver and Maddy Herzog led the charge offensively. The trio had two hits each, in the Blue Bombers’ nine-hit effort.

Johnsburg/Minerva’s Molly Smith had two singles, while Lucia Williams hit one double. The Irish Jaguars recorded six total hits.

Beaney started the game on the mound and earned the win, striking out four batters and walking three.

After Lake Placid tacked on one more run in the bottom of the third inning, Johnsburg/Minerva found some life when Williams and Smith scored one run each in the top of the fourth.

However, the Blue Bombers responded with a run in both the fourth and fifth inning to seal the victory. The Irish Jaguars scored its final run in the fifth inning.

Tuesday’s game was the final regular season home contest for Lake Placid. The team will finish out the year with back-to-back away games, starting today against Chazy and ending on Tuesday in Crown Point. Both games are slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
