SARANAC LAKE — After opening up match play just last week, the Lake Placid golf team realized quickly on Monday how important it is to have all six of their golfers competing.

The Blue Bombers were without one of its top golfers, Grady Draper, and needed strong results from its top four golfers to fend off rival Saranac Lake 3-3 in a tiebreaker at the Saranac Lake Golf Club in Ray Brook. Lake Placid won the tiebreaker with the lowest combined score from its top four golfers beating the Red Storm 175-190.

The Blue Bombers picked up wins from its top three positions, Brady Tremblay, Chris Byrne and Carver Bell, on the way to improving to 2-1 overall. Saranac Lake’s Ryan McGinnis-Theis, David Rascoe and Cooper Patnode earned wins in the team’s loss.

Tremblay, a senior playing in the top spot for Lake Placid, was the medalist after he finished with a low round of 39. Tremblay earned a four-stroke victory over Noah Jewtraw, whose 43 was the low round of the day for the Red Storm.

Two other Lake Placid golfers shot rounds in the 40s on the way to victory. Competing in the second spot, Byrne defeated Saranac Lake’s senior Evan Hochwald 40-46. The Blue Bombers’ Carver Bell, an eighth-grader, topped Carson St. Louis, also an eighth-grader, 40-51.

McGinnis-Theis, a Red Storm eighth-grader, triumphed in the fourth spot, beating Seb Cecunjanin 50-56. McGinnis-Theis’ improved to 2-2 on the season. Rascoe, an eighth-grader, won the fifth match, defeating Liam Gotham 57-66.

Without Draper, the Blue Bombers had to forfeit one of its positions, giving Cooper Patnode the individual victory in the sixth match. Patnode, an eighth-grader, shot a 52.

Saranac Lake fell to 1-3 with the setback and next takes on Ticonderoga today at 3:30 p.m. Lake Placid was slated to take on AuSable Valley on Tuesday at home, before traveling to the Barracks Golf Course in Plattsburgh, to play Saranac Central.
