LAKE PLACID — Having just won the first contest of the season on Tuesday, the Saranac Lake Placid girls lacrosse team looked poised to win its second in a row on Thursday.

Right away, SLP controlled the contest and seemingly never let up, topping the Franklin Academy (Malone) Huskies 13-2 in the team’s home opener at the North Elba Athletic Fields in Lake Placid.

“I thought they played as well as they could,” SLP’s co-head coach Jeff Denkenberger said. “Malone is a first-year team, so I’ve got to give them a lot of credit for coming out. It’s tough, we’ve been in that position before.

“Offensively, I felt like we were bunching up a lot,” he added. “We were able to spread out and be patient in the second half and our defense didn’t get a lot of action. But they did well.”

SLP scored nine goals in the first half and tacked on four more in the second, while Lizzie Harvey led the team with five goals on all five of her shots.

“She was on fire,” Denkenberger said. “She’s strong and only a freshman. She’s going to be a force to be reckoned with down the road for sure.”

Tyler Buth, Sydney Lawrence and Kaitlyn Yando scored two goals each for SLP, while Phoebe Peer and Addison Dann netted one goal apiece.

“We got goals from all of our key offensive players. Our subs got to play,” Denkenberger said. “The same group of people got our assists, too.”

Peer and Dann also recorded two assists each, while Lawrence and Yando each had one assist.

“When we pass the ball well, we play well,” Denkenberger said. “The few times we scored we passed the ball well.”

Malone scored both of its goals in the second half, but SLP’s Samara Cirikovic held strong in the net to earn her second win, as the team improved its overall record to 2-1. The team beat Heuvelton 11-7 on Tuesday.

“It means a lot to us. I don’t know if I can’t sit back here and tell you the last time we won two in a row,” Denkenberger said. “It’s a huge confidence booster for these girls. These girls worked their butts off. They really do. They have fun. It’s a great group of kids and they deserve a couple of wins.”

SLP is hoping to keep the momentum rolling in its next game against the Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Lake Placid.
