LAKE PLACID — The Saranac Lake Placid girls lacrosse team didn’t get off to the greatest start on the offensive side of the ball when it hosted the Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils on Tuesday. But on the defensive side of the ball, SLP was dominant and there wasn’t much the Blue Devils could do before the hosts figured things out offensively.

With just a two-goal lead at halftime, SLP outscored Ogdensburg 6-1 in the second half to top the Blue Devils 9-2 at the North Elba Athletic Fields. The victory was the third straight for SLP, which improved the team to 3-1 overall.

“We switched some things on offense in the second half which allowed us to score more,” SLP co-head coach Jeff Denkenberger said. “Offensively, we struggled getting the ball in the middle in the first half. In the second half, we made a few switches and our offense came on and did just as good of a job. It was a great team effort.”

Freshman Tyler Burth led the charge for SLP with four goals while Addison Dann and Lizzie Harvey scored two goals each. Sydney Lawrence chipped in one goal during the win.

“Our girls passed the ball well,” Denkenberger said. “If we pass the ball well. We play well and win.”

Dann led the team with three assists, while Phoebe Peer had two.

Ogdensburg was only able to muster up two goals during the game thanks in part to the stellar defensive effort from SLP. Hannah Costello and Abby Guasconi scored one goal each for the Blue Devils.

“Our defense was awesome,” Denkenberger said. “Our defense held together amazing and it’s all because of one drill that we did.”

Denkenberger gave credit to one of the team’s assistant coaches this season, Carolyn. He said that she has really helped both him and fellow co-head coach Josh Dann with a few things that have made them a better team already.

“She played lacrosse in college,” he said. “We did one drill and now our defense has changed. We won that game on defense.”

Junior Samra Cirikovic earned the win in net while recording seven saves.

“She had a great couple of stops. It could’ve easily been an 8-5 game,” Denkenberger said. “She made at least three great saves that could’ve made it an 8-5 game.”

Following the win, SLP to host the Potsdam Sandstoners today at the North Elba Athletic Fields at 6 p.m. The Sandstoners previously defeated SLP 13-7 on March 28.
