Bobcats snowshoe team excels at Ontario 6K race

Fifteen members of the Paul Smith’s College snowshoe team took part in the 2023 Ontario Provincial Snowshoe Championships on Sunday. The competion was held at Hammond Hill Resort in Hammond, Ontario.

The Paul Smith’s College men were paced by Noah Kuc in place third in time of 27 minutes, 48 seconds. After Kuc’s finish four other Bobcats finished inside the top 10.

Alex Cameron (29:57) finished in sixth place, Sam Finger (30:04) was seventh, Carson Wohlers (31:26) took eighth, Nate Shader (31:54) placed ninth and Dermot O’Connor (32:04) was 10th.

Bernie Hogan — who currently leads the Ontario Snowshoe Series points — was the winner of Sunday’s men’s race finishing in a time of 23:24. Charley Murphy of Ontario finished in second in 24:48.

On the women’s side, Wes Burkit won the 6K event in 32:18, defeating the current points leader in the Ontario Snowshoe Series, Katy Murphy. Murphy finished in a time of 32:07.

Paul Smith’s Ellen Haas placed third overall in 33:31, while Madison Reardon of Saranac Lake was fourth in 34:39.

The Bobcats runners were the only competitors from the United States, on what was announced as the host venue of the Canadian National Snowshoe Championship in 2024.

The final competitive events on the calendar are the Brookhaven 5K Snowshoe Race in Porters Corners next Saturday. The race will be followed by the Garnet Hill Lodge 5K in North River to conclude the winter snowshoe racing season for the collegiate team.
