SARANAC LAKE — Participants in the Saranac Lake Fish & Game Club’s 39th annual Colby Classic Ice Fishing derby scattered along the ice of Lake Colby in Saranac Lake this weekend.

With the fish biting this year, one competitor was able to catch one of the 15 tagged fish. Tiffany Boyer caught a tagged salmon at this year’s Colby Classic. She traveled from Johnstown with her family and friends to fish the derby.

But Boyer wasn’t the only one who had a good weekend — youngster Feliciti Snow dominated the northern pike youth division by bringing in the top four longest fish. Her biggest fish was 30 inches long, but according to the Colby Classic rules, only one prize will be awarded per person in each category. Claudia Lawrence took second with a catch of 21.5 inches.

Owen Morehouse caught the first and third longest perch in the youth division. His biggest catch was 11.5 inches. Sam Duprey took second with 11.25 inches and Ciara Rivers was third with an 11-inch perch.

In the youth trout division, Carma Crofts won with a catch of 17.25 inches, while Cheyanne Reyell was second with 12.25 inches. Morehouse caught the third longest with a 12-inch trout.

Meanwhile, Sandy Gorgas was the lone youth participant to catch a Salmon. His fish was 17.75 inches.

In the adult division for the northern pike category, Austin Gordon hauled in the longest fish of the tournament at 36.25 inches. Logan McDougall was second with a 35-inch pike and Jacob Schmidt placed third at 33.75 inches.

Jim Manzer won the adult trout division with a 16.5-inch catch. Manzer also won the grand prize fishing charter. Curt Staves and Don Veloski had the same-sized trout at 14.5 inches, but Staves caught his a day before to earn second place.

Nick Orton had the top salmon at 26.25 inches. Ken Carte was runner-up in the salmon competition, with a 25-inch catch. Nick Marone earned third place at 21.25 inches.

Carte, an annual competitor at the Derby traveled from Chatueagay. After not placing last year, he not only caught the second-place salmon, but he also had the second-longest perch at 11.5 inches.

Cruz Carriere won the perch competition with a 12-inch catch, while Cedar Rivers was third with 11.5 inches. Rivers caught his perch after Carte.

According to Club president Tom Cleator, everything went smoothly this year.

“We’ve got good competition this is the most I’ve seen on the board with all categories covered,” Cleator said. “The weather has been OK and there is ice. We are more organized than last year so it’s working a little bit better.”

While the weather on Saturday postponed multiple events throughout the area, the Colby Classic forged through. According to Cleator, the weather didn’t have a huge effect on the turnout.

“It seems like it did better for the fishing because we got a lot more on the board, so I’m pretty happy about that,” Cleator said.

The tournament included a $100 prize for each winner in each youth category and $200 for each winner in the adult division. Prizes were also awarded to the second and third-place finishers in each division.
