PAUL SMITHS — Paul Smith’s College head Nordic skiing coach Matthew Dougherty has been named to the coaching staff for U.S. Biathlon for the 2023 FISU Winter World University Games. The biathlon events will begin on Jan. 14 with the individual competition followed by four more races over the course of the games.

In addition, Paul Smith’s College has seven athletes competing in Anchorage, Alaska, from Dec. 28 to 31 for a chance to be named to the U.S. Biathlon team for the World University Games.

The Lake Placid 2023 FISU Winter World University Games will be held from Jan. 12 to 22 in Lake Placid, and Paul Smith’s College will be hosting student-athletes from across the globe. Staged every two years in a different city, the Games are an international multi-sport event organized for university student-athletes by the International University Sports Federation. Teams from 44 nations will compete in 86 medal events in 12 sports.

“Congratulations to Paul Smith’s Matthew Dougherty for being named a coach to the upcoming Winter World University Games,” said Dan Kelting, interim president at Paul Smith’s College. “The Paul Smith’s community is proud of what Coach Dougherty has accomplished and we can’t wait to root him — and our student-athletes — on at the Games. Paul Smith’s College is honored to be an official host of the Games so we can showcase our second-to-none campus, Nordic facilities, and academic programs.”

“It’s an honor to be named to the coaching staff for World University Games. I am excited to be working with and helping these athletes compete in the Games,” Dougherty said. “Having spent the past three years working with athletes on the trails at Mount Van Hoevenberg and on the range, I hope that experience will give the athletes a little advantage. The biathlon races should be one of the marquee events during the games full of tremendous athletes and challenging races it will be a great experience being in the thick of it.”

Paul Smith’s College has more than 31 miles of trails for Nordic skiing, and it is the nation’s only college with a biathlon shooting range. The college has also been designated an official training facility by U.S. Biathlon and USA Nordic.
