LAKE PLACID — Lake Placid Soccer Centre founder Mike “Twig” McGlynn and his crew have put together soccer camps each summer since 1977. For the past two years, however, the group hasn’t been able to host overnight camps because of the coronavirus pandemic.
This year, the Lake Placid Soccer Centre is regrouping and looking to get back to its original form.
“We’ve had no income for two years,” McGlynn said. “We did run a day camp but that’s not anything compared to (the overnights).”
The LPSC is scheduled to bring back its overnight camps from July 23 to 30 at the St. Lawrence University campus in Canton. The LPSC will also have two day camps in July and August in Lake Placid.
McGlynn said the impact of COVID on this organization has been huge and he hopes the camp can return to the way it once was — more than 70,000 kids have participated in the camps since they first started in Lake Placid.
“The biggest thing is we have all of these kids who love soccer,” McGlynn said. “We have a really good program and they come to camp they get up in the morning and kick the ball until late at night and it’s pretty neat. The kids go away happy.”
The LPSC clinics are for campers ranging in age from 5 to 8 years old in the mighty-mite group to older elite players, who are hoping to move onto the college ranks.
The campers who attend the LPSC camps learn from the Coerver coaching method, which is named after former Dutch player and coach Wiel Coerver.
“(Coerver) broke down these moves and he created something that you’re able to teach kids the moves of the best (soccer) player,” McGlynn said.
The day camps in Lake Placid are slated for July 18 to 22 and Aug. 15 to 19 at the North Elba Show Grounds.
