SL girls place second at state meet

The Saranac Lake girls cross-country skiing team came up just short of winning the state title Tuesday, finishing second to Brighton in the NYSPHSAA Nordic Ski Championships team scoring at Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area in Springwater.

The Red Storm went into day two of the state championship meet with a lead in the team scoring, but Brighton rallied in Tuesday’s classic relay races to capture the title. Saranac Lake collected 47 points in Monday’s skate-skiing race then scored another 21 on Tuesday. Brighton, a Section V team from the Rochester area, had 37 points Monday and 35 on Tuesday for a total of 72.

Saranac Lake’s trio of Sylvie Linck (12:12.1), Sophia Kelting (11:34.9) and Evelyn Eller (13:20.1) finished fourth in Tuesday’s 3×3-kilometer relay race with a total time of 37:07.2. Brighton won the relay with a time of 35:37.3.

Saranac Lake and Lake Placid girls teamed up to form what was known as the Section VII-A team that finished eighth in 41:13.3. Bella Wissler, Harley Cohen and Lynn Palen were skiers on that team.

The Section VII-B team included Ellie Evans, Ruby Smith and Sydney Lawrence, a team that finished 15th in 45:36.4.

Queensbury won the boys state team title with 88 points, while Lake Placid finished third with 61 points.

Saranac Lake skiers Colter Cheney-Seymour, Adrian Hayden and Nick Kelting competed as the Section VII-A team in the boys race. They finished second overall in the relay with a time of 31:20.9, trailing only Queensbury, which recorded a time of 31:15.2.

Andrew Scanio, Michael Skutt and Max Flannigan represented the Lake Placid team in the boys meet, taking seventh place in 33:31.4.

The Section VII-B team of Sam Ash, Reuben Bernstein and Griffin Smith placed 13th in 35:32.6

Madison Relyea, of Mayfield, was given the girls’ Nordic Combined Award for her effort over the two days of racing. Ryland Hodson, of Pittsford Sutherland won the award for the boys.

Hodson won Monday’s individual 10k race in 33:32.5 and was the only racer to finish in under 10 minutes on Tuesday. Relyea finished second on Monday, then recorded the fastest time of the day (11:20.7) during her leg of Tuesday’s relay

Section VII, which was entirely made up of Saranac Lake and Lake Placid skiers, were the top boys section, accumulating 214 points in the individual on the first day and 175 on Tuesday for a total of 415. Section II was second with 412. Section VII placed third in the girls’ sectional race that was won by Section V.

ALPINE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Saranac Lake junior Andrew Fogarty placed second for the second day in a row Tuesday in the giant slalom race of the NYSPHSAA Alpine Championships at Bristol Mountain in Canandaigua.

Fogarty registered a time of 59.07 seconds on his first run Tuesday, then put down the fastest run of the day on his second run with a 57.15 to finish with a two-run time of 1:56.22. Alex Tooker, of Oneida, won the giant slalom state title with a combined time of 1:55.05 (57.82 first run, 57.23 second run).

Hunter Montgomery, of Queensbury, placed third with times of 58.79 and 58.06 for a total time of 1:56.85. Montgomery, who took first place in Monday’s slalom race, was named as the Alpine Combined Champion for the two-day meet.

Cole VanEtten, of Saranac Lake, took 27th overall in the giant slalom race with a time of 2:12.59, Andrew Levinson, of Lake Placid, was 35th in 2:28.02 and Will Miemis, of Saranac Lake, took 37th in 2:28.02.

In the girls’ meet, Saranac Lake placed sixth as a team. Zoe Carpenter led the way for the Red Storm in Tuesday’s giant slalom, placing 26th with a two-run time of 2:09.91. Teammate Mayah Land finished 30th in 2:11.84 and Gisele Munson was 50th in 2:29:05,

Elllicotville’s Logan Fredrickson won the giant slalom in 1:56.58, and her sister Hayly Fredrickson was second in 1:59.84.

Pittsford won the girls Alpine state championship, outscoring runner-up Ballston Spa 86-81.
