On Friday, the Blue Bombers earned one of those wins, and they picked it up in overtime, topping Guilderland 2-1 at the Olympic Center’s 1932 Rink.

Sophomore Hunter Wilmot notched the game-winner when he banged home the game-winner 37 seconds into overtime to lift Lake Placid’s boys to their first triumph of the season.

Tyler Hinkley notched the first goal of the game just 41 seconds into the contest to put Lake Placid on top 1-0 in an opening period that saw the Blue Bombers out shoot Guilderland 8-2. The Storm turned the tables in the middle stanza, holding a 14-6 edge in shots on goal and getting the tying tally by Evan Cary at the 9:46 mark.

After struggling in the second period, the Blue Bombers turned in a better effort in the third, although they nearly gave up a goal just 14 seconds into the period but got a break when a Guilderland shot rattled off the goal post. The Storm out shot the Blue Bombers 10-6 in the third but couldn’t put a puck past freshman goalie Anders Stanton, who finished with 21 saves to earn the win in nets.

“We’re young and this is a huge win for us,” Lake Placid head coach Butch Martin said. “Guys who have never played before are contributing. You’re looking at most of our guys and they’re are freshman and sophomores.”

Hinkley’s early goal was assisted by Jarrett Hathaway and Wilmot, and was a dribbler that he tapped past Guilderland goalie Daneil Cooper. The shot just slipped over the red line and ended up in the right corner of the net as Cooper reached back in vain to collect the puck.

Carey’s tying tally also wound up being a shot that crept into the net. On the play, Carey sent a shot along the ice from just inside the blue line. Stanton had originally stopped the attempt with his skate, but lost sight of the rebound and was unable to gain control while falling onto the ice just in time to see puck slide into the net.

Following a tough second period, the Blue Bombers were able to hang on with a more solid performance in the third and then came through in extra time for their first victory three games into the season. Wilmot netted the game-winner from in close when he sent home a rebound off a shot by Hathaway, who finished with two assists in the contest.

“In between the second and third periods, we said that wasn’t a good enough effort and they knew it,” Martin said. “The captains responded and got them going good. A loss would have been devastating. That win helps us a lot. It’s just nice, at least we have a win now. We may lose four in a row or whatever but we got a win. That was a fun team to play against. They were similar to us, and it was just a fun game to be in.”

Martin was especially pleased with his goalie’s effort in the win. Lake Placid outshot Guilderland 26-22, which included a 2-0 edge in overtime.

“Stanton played really well,” Martin said. “He made some saves in the second period that kept us in there, and he’s a freshman too, all 120 pounds of him.”

“It was a good match,” Guilderland head coach Jim Archibald said. “They outskated us. Our first period was bad, we came back in the second and then sort of fell apart in the third. You have to play 45 minutes of hockey to win. Actually, 50 minutes tonight.

“Instead of knocking the guys down in front of the net, we were watching the puck,” Archibald added. “We have some fast guys, but until we play as a team and do as we’re told, we’re going to have a tough time winning.”

Both teams will be back in action today. The Blue Bombers take on Fayetteville-Manlius at the 1932 Rink beginning at 2 p.m. The Storm will travel to face Saranac Lake, with the opening faceoff slated for 1 p.m.
