TUPPER LAKE — With a young squad and new pitching rules, the Tupper Lake baseball team is still trying to find its footing in Section X league play. The Lumberjacks suffered an 18-1 loss Wednesday against the St. Lawrence Larries.
“We knew coming into the season that we were a very young team and it has shown at the beginning of this season,” Lumberjack coach Travis Dupuis said in an email to the Enterprise. “The jump from modified to varsity is a big jump in the speed at which the game is played in the field and at the plate.
“It was a rough day at the plate (to) only have one hit this game. We are encouraged though — some of the younger players on the team are looking more comfortable when up to bat, and we are hoping that this will start to translate into getting some more baserunners and giving ourselves the chance to score more runs.”
Quinn Shaheen had the lone hit for the Lumberjacks, while all other players were put on base through walks or errors.
Despite this, Dupuis is optimistic about the team going forward.
“The team has been working hard so far and progressing. We are starting to have flashes of playing some really good baseball in the field, (but) in between those we are making too many errors at very inopportune times.
The Lumberjacks next take on Chateaugay at home Monday at 4:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL
Lake Placid 10, Northeastern Clinton 4
CHAMPLAIN — The Keene combination struck again for the Lake Placid softball team, as Elaina Smith and Hanna Whitney helped lead the Blue Bombers to a 10-4 victory on the road Wednesday against Northeastern Clinton.
The was the fourth straight for the Blue Bombers, who swept a doubleheader over Moriah on Monday and followed that with an 11-4 triumph Tuesday against Northern Adirondack in a weather-shortened five-inning game.
Against the Cougars, Smith struck out 10 and walked just two batters to pick up the pitching win, and at the plate, fellow Keene Central senior belted a home run in the Bombers victory.
Shelby Jewtraw also had a big day on offense, belting a double and triple to pace Lake Placid’s 11-hit attack.

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake softball team sank into a big hole early on the way to a 22-4 loss at home Wednesday against AuSable Valley.
AuSable Valley jumped out of the gate by taking a 11-0 lead in its first two at-bats, and after Saranac Lake responded with three runs in the bottom of the second, the Patriots answered right back, scoring seven more times in the top of the third for a commanding 18-3 advantage. The Red Storm mustered one more run in the bottom of the third in a game shortened to five innings.

BASEBALL
Lake Placid 10, Moriah 7
PORT HENRY — Lake Placid’s bats finally sprung to life Tuesday in a 10-7 baseball victory on the road against Moriah.
The Blue Bombers pounded out 14 hits in the game, and Jesse Izzo and Evan Damp led the way with three apiece. Izzo finished with three singles and Damp rapped out a pair of singles and a double.
Scott Sharlow picked up Lake Placid’s other extra-base hit, a triple, during his 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Logan Brown also chipped in two singles in the win
Trailing 2-0 after three innings, the Blue Bombers rallied with three runs in the top of the fourth to grab their first lead. The contest then see-sawed and was tied 5-5 when Lake Placid stepped up to the plate in the top of the sixth. That’s when the Blue Bombers scored three times to take the lead for good, and after the Vikings responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to make in an 8-6 contest, Lake Placid tacked on a pair of insurance runs in its final at-bat to all but seal the deal.
Kamm Cassidy, Colin Hayes and Jesse Izzo all worked the mound for Lake Placid and combined for a seven-hitter, with Hayes picking up the pitching win.
Chris Heald and Matt Pelkey paced Moriah with two hits each.
