SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake boys hockey team regained possession of the Casey McHugh Memorial Tournament trophy Saturday after a five-year hiatus.
The Red Storm put together two narrow victories, a 3-2 win over Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa on Friday and a 3-1 victory over Niskayuna/Schenectady on Saturday, to earn the championship.
Saranac Lake fell behind early in Saturday’s game when Niskayuna/
Schenectady netted the game’s first goal 16 seconds after the opening faceoff.
It was all Red Storm from there, though, as Austen Reyell scored in the second period and Brett Dawson and Drew Sturgeon found the back of the net in the third. Casey Sturgeon was credited with two assists.

Dawson finished with a goal and an assist in the game and earned the tournament’s most valuable player award with five points over the two games.
Saranac Lake outshot Niskyauna/Schenectady 39-7 as Bruno Freeman picked up the win in goal.
Casey Sturgeon was the hero of the night Friday when his second goal of the game at the 13:07 mark of the third period proved to be the difference in a 3-2 Red Storm victory over Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake.
Dawson scored in the first then assisted on a Casey Sturgeon goal in the second as the Red Storm took a 2-0 lead into third period. Burnt Hills scored twice in the third, before Sturgeon put the game away with assists going to Reyell and Dawson.
Saranac Lake and Burnt Hills each put 29 shots on goal in another goaltending win for Freeman.

In other Casey McHugh tournament action Saturday, Lake Placid was dealt its second loss of the tournament when Burnt Hills scored three goals in the third period to secure a 3-2 victory over the Blue Bombers.
Bjorn Kroes scored in the first period and Sean Moore connected in the second to give the Blue Bombers a 2-0 lead going into the third. It was the second one-goal loss for the Blue Bombers in two days as Lake Placid fell in overtime Friday night against Niskayuna.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Saranac Lake 57, Brushton-Moira 31
BRUSHTON — The Saranac Lake boys basketball team took a big lead early and never let up Sunday on the way to a 57-31 non-league victory over Brushton-Moira.
The Red Storm led 19-7 after the first quarter and 44-23 after three to take control.
Joe Viscardo poured in 21 points and Jarrett Ashton had 11 to lead the way for Saranac Lake.
