400 skaters compete in Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID – More than 400 skaters competed June 23-26 at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid at the annual Lake Placid Figure Skating Championships.

Competitors from beginner level to senior participated in various events including free skating and moves in the field, and the competition took place in the 1932 and 1980 rinks daily. This year, six countries were represented in the Championships-United States, Canada, Estonia, Great Britain, Israel, and Mexico.

The event to watch was the Senior Ladies competition, where the US, Canada, Estonia, and Israel were represented. Perhaps the most prominent participant in the event was Canadian national champion and the winner of the 2015 Lake Placid Figure Skating Championships Senior Ladies event, Alaine Chartrand. Other world-level skaters who competed included two-time Estonian silver medalist Johanna Allik, world competitor Aimee Buchanan of Israel, and world competitor Netta Schreiber, who also represented Israel. They were joined by other elite Senior Ladies level skaters from the U.S. and Canada.

In the Senior Ladies short program, Chartrand won with a total score of 57.42. Megan Wessenberg from the Skating Club of Boston placed second and Buchanan finished third.

In the long program, Chartrand faltered, falling several times on the triple jumps that are essential to competition in Senior Ladies. Buchanan leapt ahead to win the long lrogram, with a total score of 97.72, as compared to Chartrand’s score of 90.43. Heidi Munger of the Skating Club of Boston placed third with a score of 90.30.

Local skaters represented the Skating Club of Lake Placid in the competition as well. Ciana Cerruti was the highest level athlete for the SCLP, competing in the Novice Ladies event. Other skaters competing included Carly Brox (Pre-Juvenile Girls Test Track), Chloe Hurteau (Pre-Preliminary Girls Test Track Group B) and Sarah Samperi (Prelimary Girls Test Track).
