The loudest voice

To the editor:

The loudest voice theory posits that the most vocal minority in a group, or on social media, is mistakenly viewed as the majority opinion, and, by dominating discourse, is able to influence public sentiment and decision-making. We’ve watched these voices dominate on the national stage, seeding extremism, false truths and a narrative of fear and division that has become all too pervasive.

Sadly, these divisive tactics, and the political division that they create, have become a reality at home, too. Seemingly overnight, a small, but very vocal, minority have worked to create a narrative of negativity, division and distrust. Let us not pretend that the volatility of national politics hasn’t taken a toll on everyone and everything. But, let us also agree that they need not define us. The status quo in Washington can’t be the bar we set for our behavior at home, amongst our neighbors, in our little town.

To those of you out there pushing the notion that we here need to lower ourselves to the example set by national politics, I say “No.” Not here. Not in our home town. Not with our children watching. Not now, not ever.

To be certain, the upcoming local election is important; but perhaps more important is the landscape we create for our shared future. What tactics will we stoop to in another four years, and another four after that? How low can the bar go?
