What was learned from the Hiibel case
To the editor:
Try looking up the Supreme Court case: Hiibel v. Sixth Judicial District Court of Nevada. This case is about a rancher in Nevada who sued when he was arrested for refusing to show his ID to police.
The court decided against Hiibel, saying the only people who are required to show their IDs to police on demand are people driving a motor vehicle.
They also said, specifically, that people who are passengers in a vehicle or a pedestrian on a sidewalk do not have to show identification. They just have to tell their real names to the police.
Why don’t people or the news tell us about this rule?
