Car repairs in Saranac Lake a looming problem?

To the editor:

What if one or more of the few large, well-known auto/truck repair shops in town shut down as Sturdy Rentals did? Most of these garages were founded by guys who are now in their 60s and some are pushing 70 years old. I know of at least one that has been up for sale for over a year. As it is, many of them are maxed out and can’t take additional work for a variety of reasons (mainly lack of auto mechanics).

Is this really a serious issue? I don’t know, but if many retire or shut down at the same there will be a problem. Perhaps our local government should talk to these critical utility/service locations individually and find out what their plans are. Unlike carpenters, electricians, plumbers, heating, etc., auto shops involve large capital outlay for lifts/shop/tools and so on. Thus not easily started or replaced. Also, you come to them, not the other way around.

So the next time you bring you car/truck in, look at the guy who is there. Look at their grey hairs and ask, “When will you retire?” and more importantly, “Who will replace you when you do?”

Just a thought…. And … The Amish don’t care …
