Making healthy choices during the holidays
To the editor:
Let’s be honest: The holidays can make it challenging to eat well and stay active, especially in the Adirondacks, where long winters add extra barriers to physical activity. During this time, remember that some activity is better than none.
Here at The Heart Network, our Creating Healthy Schools & Communities program, which is funded by the state Department of Health, works with schools and communities to increase access to healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity so all community members can choose a healthy lifestyle. A major focus of that work is promoting easy, accessible means of staying active and making healthy food choices.
The CDC recommends that children and adolescents get at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity daily, while adults should aim for 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity, including muscle-strengthening exercises. Older adults and adults with chronic conditions can also benefit from activities that improve balance and flexibility. Even small changes can make a difference toward meeting physical activity recommendations. Consider parking farther away when shopping, walking through stores instead of shopping online or adding a brisk walk to your day.
The “some is better than none” rule can also be applied to nutrition. Water is not always the first choice at holiday gatherings but choosing it over sugary drinks can help reduce added sugar intake and prevent health challenges such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
This season, you could also start new healthy traditions with your family. Try adding one of these ideas:
Active traditions: Take a family walk after meals, go ice skating or try a winter hike in the Adirondacks.
Fun challenges: Set step goals, organize family fitness challenges or play active games to keep everyone moving.
Volunteering: Spend time helping your community during the holidays. Volunteering is a great way to get active, connect with others and support your neighbors.
Each and every healthy choice matters. Small changes can make a big difference, keeping us active and nourished so we can fully enjoy the holidays.
