A letter of gratitude
To the editor:
I teach 5th grade at St. Bernard’s School and recently had the privilege of taking my class on a walking tour led by Alex Krach, program coordinator at Historic Saranac Lake. My students and I wrote a letter of gratitude to Alex after the tour. Alex and the whole experience made a big impact on my students. I am beyond grateful that Alex and Historic Saranac Lake make this (and many other amazing programs) free and accessible to all students in our community. They are such a treasure to us. Here is the letter we wrote:
Dear Alex,
On behalf of the students and staff of St. Bernard’s School, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks for the wonderful tour you led through our town. The children were absolutely delighted–your enthusiasm, storytelling (I was moved to tears by the story of Isabel Smith), and deep knowledge of Historic Saranac Lake brought our shared history to life in a way they will never forget.
Opportunities like this are truly invaluable. In a world that moves so quickly, it is essential for young people to pause and learn where they come from–to understand the layers of effort, struggle, creativity, and community that shaped the place they call home. Through your tour, the students were able to see change with their own eyes: how buildings evolved, how stories were preserved, and how the people of Saranac Lake left their marks on the world. This kind of firsthand perspective is something no textbook can fully capture.
Thank you for reminding our students that preserving history is more than maintaining old structures–it is about keeping alive the lessons, resilience, and inspiration those stories hold. Your engaging style made every stop feel exciting, meaningful, and accessible. You gave our children not just facts, but a genuine connection to the town they love.
We are beyond grateful for the time, care, and passion you share with our community. What you offer our students is a true gift, and we look forward to many more opportunities to learn with you.
With sincere appreciation,
Mrs. Rebecca Peria
