Safeguarding our residents

To the editor:

On Monday, Sept. 8, the resolution about safeguarding our residents will come up again before the Saranac Lake Village Board. By my count, this will be the fourth iteration of this resolution, which has been tinkered with far too long.

A review of the details of the resolution, taken both individually and collectively, are all things that anyone should be able to support wholeheartedly. I am still at a loss as to why the board is still arguing about whether to adopt this.

It says that we, as a village, will not tolerate hate, discrimination, or harassment.

It says that we will not invest Village resources to do a job that should be left to the Federal government.

It says that in the pursuit of day-to-day business, our local police will not consider the immigration status of people they interact with since immigration enforcement is not their job.

It says that all Village residents will have access to public safety and emergency services.

Can anyone reading this see anything that we would not want to affirm to the residents of our Village? There are those in our community who are afraid to go out in public, seek public services, or even call for help when they are in need. If you agree, come out at 5 p.m. on Sept. 8 and let our board know that you support this measure.
