House on fire

To the editor:

The house is on fire.

The house that has stood for 250 years, set ablaze by those meant to safeguard it.

No authorized firefighters are there, they’ve been ordered to stay away.

Volunteers have formed a bucket brigade and a few have garden houses, but the flames grow higher.

Some passersby smirk in quiet satisfaction, while others feign indifference.

Many honk horns and shout encouragement to the volunteers, but not enough stop and help to make a difference.

The flames are growing and the house is burning down.

The house is America.
