Concerning the state of the cemetery for Memorial Day

To the editor:

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the deplorable condition of our local cemetery as Memorial Day has passed. Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember the brave men and women who have given their lives in service to our country, and it is disheartening to see the resting place of our heroes in such a state of neglect.

Upon visiting the cemetery recently, I was appalled by the sight that greeted me. Overgrown weeds and tall grass obscured the headstones, making it difficult to navigate and locate loved ones. This not only disrespects the memory of those buried there, it also reflects poorly on our community’s commitment to preserving and honoring their legacy.

Memorial Day is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by our military personnel, and it is imperative that we provide a dignified and respectful environment for their remembrance. I urge the local authorities to take immediate action to restore the cemetery to a condition befitting the significance of this day.

It is our collective duty to honor the fallen by ensuring their final resting place is treated with the utmost care and respect. Let us come together to make the necessary improvements so that the cemetery can serve as a proper tribute to the heroes we remember on Memorial Day.

I understand that the supervisor of the town of Harrietstown is herself a veteran. My father was a pilot during WWII, my stepfather also saw battle in the Army, my brother served in the Navy. I am so proud of them for all their sacrifices.

Please, if you have a loved one buried in the Harrietstown Cemetery, call the town officials and let them know that this will not be tolerated. Let your voices be heard loud and clear, full of honor for loved ones that have passed.

Sincerely,
