An open letter to congresswoman Stefanik
To the editor:
Congresswoman Stefanik: I am wondering what, if anything, you are doing about the recent incident of a mother and three children in Sackets Harbor being taken by men in masks, handcuffed, put into a van and eventually taken to a detention center in Texas.
According to an article by NCPR, border czar Tom Homan stated several times in a WWNY-TV interview that the family was detained to make sure they were safe and he suggested that the children were detained as potential victims or witnesses to a child pornography case.
It seems if that were true, the men would not have been wearing masks, the children would not have been handcuffed and the family would not been in a detention center for 11 days, so why is the truth not being told?
This must have been extremely traumatic for those children and I would hope that our government can show some kindness and compassion. I know immigration is a difficult and complicated issue, but do children really need to be treated like criminals? Congresswoman Stefanik, as the representative of New York’s 21st congressional district, why have we not yet heard your voice condemning these actions and protecting the children in your district? Living in this country legally or not, children deserve your compassion and concern.
