On the ‘Puppy Mill Pipeline’ law

To the editor:

A new law aptly called the “Puppy Mill Pipeline” law prohibiting retail pet stores in New York from selling dogs, cats and rabbits will help prevent the animal overpopulation crisis from worsening. Here’s why.

Every animal sold by a breeder or a pet store means that a homeless animal loses a chance at adoption. And breeders usually don’t require the animals they sell to be sterilized, creating the potential for even more unwanted animals. When, in the U.S. alone, some 70 million animals already exist in overcrowded shelters and on the streets, there can be no such thing as responsible breeding.

No one should be buying dogs, cats, rabbits — or any other animals — from anyone. If you’re committed to providing a lifetime of loving care to a new family member, head to your local shelter, where you’ll find animals of all sizes, ages and personalities who desperately need homes.

Sincerely,
