Humanitarian aid: A critical component of the US foreign policy

To the editor:

As the war in Israel continues, the world is still witnessing the unsettled war in Ukraine and the overall humanitarian need that has no precedent. The Israelis’ government has finally allowed humanitarian aid in Gaza to help women and children, the wounded for care.

This once again put forth the critical importance of humanitarian aid in times of crisis and the role of the U.S. government.

As a reminder, foreign assistance is the largest component of the international affairs budget and is viewed by many members of Congress as an essential instrument of U.S. foreign policy. Because of national security, commercial and humanitarian rationales, U.S. assistance flows through many federal agencies and supports myriad objectives. These objectives include promoting economic growth, reducing poverty, improving governance, expanding access to health care and education, promoting stability in conflict regions, countering terrorism, promoting human rights, strengthening allies, and curbing illicit drug production and trafficking.

There are different reasons the U.S. provides aid to countries in a specific way or amount.

In the case of Israel, the U.S. has maintained close ties with Israel since the country’s creation in 1948. Most of America’s foreign aid to Israel has historically been for military purposes, helping the country develop a missile defense system, among other projects.

By assisting other nations, the U.S. aims to create more prosperous and secure environments, prevent conflicts, and build partnerships. According to a 2022 Congressional Research Service report, foreign aid can enhance the United States’ global influence, address global challenges, and promote shared values. These objectives align with U.S. government sources and policies on foreign assistance.
