Why was the trail closed?

To the editor:

Why did St. Bernard’s post “No Trespassing” signs along the trail through the woods along Little Colby Pond on May 5, without explanation? With logs put across the trail it’s clear that no one is welcome. Is this a town decision or are they extending the cemetery up into the woods? Please explain.

I have been walking my dog along the trail for roughly eight years. As a safe place to walk, it has been part of my morning routine. As a terminal cancer patient, it is important that I get exercise both for my mental and physical health. I am very respectful as we walk through the cemetery with my dog on leash and always cleaning up after her. There are a handful of people who also walk every day with and without dogs. They are equally respectful. I rarely pass anyone. During the pandemic the high school would run through the woods. I believe they still use it (at least up until May 5). Why is it necessary to close it off to the public? I doubt it has to do with overuse or mistreatment of the land. I have never seen garbage in the woods (other than squatters five years ago). This seems to be a random decision. I hope it can be reversed.
